MESA+

MESA LogoMESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology is part of the University of Twente. The institute employs 475 people of which 275 are PhD’s or postdocs. The institute holds 1250 m2 of clean room space and state of the art research equipment and has an integral turnover of 40 million Euro per year of which more than 60% is acquired in competition from external sources. MESA+ has been the breeding ground for more than 30 high-tech start-ups to date. A targeted program for cooperation with small and medium-sized enterprises is specially set up for start-ups.

MESA+ combines the disciplines of physics, electrical engineering, chemistry and mathematics. It is strengthening its international academic and industrial network by fruitful cooperation programs. The activities of the 23 participating research groups are focused in 5 central programmes, which are responsible for 70% of the total research volume within the institute. Activities in the nanobiotechnology area are concentrated in one of these strategic research orientations, and are represented in several ongoing research programmes.
Internationally appealing research is achieved through this multidisciplinary approach. MESA+ is the largest nanotechnology institute within the Netherlands. MESA+ plays a leading role in the existing Dutch NanoNed program, and in defining the contours of the National Nanotechnology Initiative for the future.

MESA+ will manage WP3, “Education and Training in nanobiotechnology”. MESA+ is well positioned to collect and disseminate the relevant information for this Work Package due to its extensive contacts and several memoranda of understanding with nanotechnology institutes in Europe and worldwide,. MESA+ also coordinates the University of Twente Nanotechnology Masters Education.
